Not since my triumph in 2009, have I chosen to set my focus back on the achievements of the African Amerrican community.

This go round, I wanted to focus not on historical facts and tidbits bits but grander concepts that affect Everyone regardless of color. Whether it is person economic growth, educational opportunities, colorist, or faith - we all deal with barriers.

After reading for years about running, I have made the jump. I decided that post partum isn't a state I liked to live in and in the year of 30 which I am dubbing 2012-2013, I choose not to be held down by depression.

With that said, I decided to hit the Couch to 5K plan. I started in October 2011 and I only made one Saturday training session when I found out that I had an ingrown. I know I know - that should not stop you from trying but when your center is off balance, you don’t want to do anything other than sit down.

I have decided to get back up again and go for it.

Granted, it doesn’t seem like much but for someone who has stopped walking, training and every other thing - THIS is a big deal.

***I blame Jen on the Edge for this...her bike bubbles, her running, and just good attitude makes me think that I need to be more active. Plus I saw Crazy Stupid Love and honestly at the age of 30, I should be a hot piece and trust I’m going to be. The Hot Piece philosophy I’m blaming on Creole in DC who suggest we be more vain because as women, we take care of ourselves last.

Simplification of life

I really don’t know where to start. Life gets hectic. Life gets complicated. Life has layers. Much like life relationships have a cycle. Relationships are strained. Relationships end. I find myself caught up in the mire of life - I should be going out, I should be doing this, I should be....

It gets real hard, real fast.

So I started slowly.

I started scheduling times to go to Mass and Penance Services to get my spiritual house in order.

Baby steps.

I scoured my basement and threw out every piece of clothing or pair of shoes I have not worn in three years. Then I started in on crap that I have not used in at least three to four years. The rest went to the trash or Goodwill.

Getting there.

I created a zone for the Ladybug and Stinkbug to play and a chair for me to sit with my book and an iced tea and rest. I plan on making this zone pretty this year with a fresh coat of paint, some bookshelves, a desk, a tv stand, a tv and a dvd player for the kids.
Seeing progress.

It is going to take a lifetime to get a simplified version of me and that’s okay but I’m getting there. I’m working to make me better, like me, love myself so I can be a good mom and wife.

Book Review: The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A great novel set in the future. Offred is a Handmaid or the lowest rung in the female caste system. Her only job, procreate and hand her child over to her wife for proper child rearing. The novel tackles great issues such as terrorism and cultural politics on several levels -against the state and against gender.

I find the novel haunting on several levels particularly the relationship and treatment of women that gave me the pause. Women judged by their previous actions created a great riff: the pious are wives; the women who were promiscuous were handmaids; and the submissive women were domestics. Atwell describes a society in which requires promiscuous women to have relations with sterile men and then hand over the kid, if there was a kid. Promiscuous women are the property of men - even their names denote ownership.

One thing that invited questions was the act of conception, this new pious land degrades the sanctity of marriage without intimacy and with a factual sterility that implies process not a sign of faith in love. The society who sets out to be pious becomes fanatical imposing its will upon its people.

Kindle

Did I mentioned that I love my kindle? If you follow on Facebook, you have. If not, I’m professing my love for my kindle. I don’t have a name for it. But I love it.

I got my Kindle last spring when AA decided that he couldn’t share or stand to share the house tablet (huh?). So I answered back by purchasing my own technology that he couldn’t use. I know real adult but AA’s gets a little happy when he gets new things cause its a younger child characteristic...let me rationalize my husband’s weirdness my own way.

Anyhoo, I really dug into my Kindle and Kindle app for my tablet and haven’t looked back since. I even shun real books in favor of the Kindle. Its so easy for me while I nursed the Stinkbug or waited with the Ladybug at whatever appointment we were at.

I haven’t gotten into the Kindle Fire but as technology improves, I find myself sticking to tablets forever...well that and MACs.

Three Kings/Ephiphany (with pictures)

As a Baptist, we really didn’t put much emphasis on the details surrounding the birth of Jesus. As a Catholic, its all in the details from the miracle of the Virgin birth to the Star guiding the Magi. One event that is HUGE in my church community is the Festival of the Three Kings or Ephiphany.

As described by Wikipedia
In Spain and some Latin American countries, Epiphany day is called El Día de los Reyes (The Day of the Kings), i.e., the day when a group of Kings or Magi, as related in the second chapter of the gospel of Matthew, arrived to worship and bring three gifts to the baby Jesus after following a star in the heavens. This day is sometimes known as the Día de los Tres Reyes Magos (The day of the Three Royal Magi) or La Pascua de los Negros (Holy Day of the Black men) in Chile, although the latter is rarely heard. In Spanish tradition on January 6, three of the Kings: Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar, representing Europe, Arabia, and Africa, arrived on horse, camel and elephant, bringing respectively gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. Children (and many adults) polish and leave their shoes ready for the Kings' presents before they go to bed on the eve of January 6. Sweet wine, nibbles, fruit and milk are left for the Kings and their camels. In Spain children typically receive presents on this day, rather than on Christmas. In Spain the Epiphany bread/cake is known as Roscón.

So...its big. In our Parish, organizers actually get kids to write letters to the Magi, greet the Magi as the come to adore the Baby Jesus, have real animals and sing songs. After, families eat dinner prior to the Saturday evening Vigil Mass. I went in 2009 and now I find myself with a two year old and a 9 month old who would LOVE animals. The Ladybug loves horses...so this would be huge for her.

We got to the church, sat down, allowed LB to run and do her thing - organized events are not her strong suit yet. We watched the Kings proceed in, sang some songs and prayed with them, gave them letters, and watched the older children ask questions. Then we led the Kings out and visited with their animals.

Then food!!!

Later on, LB and SB got gifts from the Magi.

Mrs. Kimble by Jennifer Haigh

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A compelling family saga about a serial husband. Ken Kimble likes women so much so that he marries three times and has numerous flings. But what he leaves in his wake are catastrophic at best and humbling and worst.

The book looks at marriage and more importantly the dynamic that women hold in a marriage. Whether you're a Betty Draper, expecting the world to be your oyster or a Peggy Olson wanting to be a career girl with a traditional framework - the book leaves you to wonder where the balance is.

I wanted to look at Mr. Kimble as a horrible person but the author doesn't really let you look at Mr. Kimble as a person or a developed character rather you judge him through the eyes of each of his three wives and their children.

It is a great book that I couldn't put down for three days and it has haunted me ever since.

2012 Expectations

Last year, I gave a ridiculously long list of things I planned on doing to keep me busy. Here’s funny thing, plans don’t always go well as I learned this year. I am just looking forward to a year of family, home improvements, and hopefully a few good weeks of vacation.

Christmas 2011 Menu

Last year, we had pork tenderloin which was absolutely fabulous and easy to make. The Ladybug loved the apples and potatoes and of course mommy’s mac and cheese.

This year, I was asked to step up yet again and make a roasted chicken. Except, I have never made a roasted chicken. Problem. Not to fear, Attractive Al has swooped in and given me this...

I’m not sure if Chef Fabio is being helpful but AA thinks this guy is cool.

Needless to say, we’re doing a chicken. Wild idea. Also we are having mac and cheese cause it a holiday if we don’t have it. Green bean Casserole or just green beans - depends on the hubs. My version of Bobby Dean’s Butterscotch Carrots (take out the pepper), rolls and banana bread from the Heidelberg Bakery, rice krispy treats, and a chocolate pound cake.
I’ll give you an update on final family reviews.

Holiday Wishes 2011

So its been a ROUGH year for me and Attractive Al. Adding the Stinkbug made things fun but not any less easier. I am grateful to have gone through this year to see what resolve I really have when things really get serious.

I have had a mirror shown to me several times this year and each time I have had to really look into myself and see who I really am. From the extremely long gestational period with the Stinkbug to the Ladybug’s leg injury, it has been hard all around. We have made time for getaways but not enough.

In any case, I am grateful for the love and many well wishes of family and friends. I hope that God blesses you this Holiday Season and keeps throughout 2012.

Lessons in Parenthood

It ain't easy.

It ain't for everyone.

I have learned that you have to go with the flow. You evolve. You grow. You learn patience. You become firm and thorough in matters great and small.

I reason this due to adventures as I like to call them. Dealing with children could make Mother Teresa run away but dealing with your own (well for most of us) progeny forces you to dig and fight.

Lessons I have learned this year:
Boys wee wands are unpredictable but mommy is a stealth diaper ninja.

When your child sounds like a baby seal, go outside for five minutes.

Always go to the hospital with the pediatric emergency room.

Also carry diapers and wipe.

Limit juice.

Double pad the bed.

Always. Always carry entertainment.

Don't be ashamed of the fact that you parent and sometimes spoil your kids by providing for them. But more often than you think, spoil yourself.

And finally...The Wiggles really are your best friends. They entertain your kids when you need a break.

I was shopping in my local Alexandria Target (off Richmond Highway) when I saw a baby diaper bag for a dollar. I checked the bag's tag against the shelf label to find indeed that the item was a dollar. I checked the self scanner to find a discrepancy in pricing. I inquired with an associate who directed to inquire at the merchandise wrap stand. I immediately did so only to receive negative resistance from the manager. She made no effort to check the item or understand the situation and just simply stated "no".

I'm sorry but that is unacceptable to me. I make an effort to research prices and product availability. I also make an equal effort to shop at Target when there is a brand new Walmart down the street. Please correct the situation. Thanks

Official Book Club Selection by Kathy Griffin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A funny memoir - told as if someone was literally talking to you in a Starbucks making you double over laughing. I loved the Jerry Seinfeld stories and how KG mixed the harsh reality of a predator family member with humor and cold water wash.

I would definitely recommend this book to friends and family needing a good laugh.

So it started on my birthday...

Strange scratching.

Really loud scratching down in the basement.

Last time I checked we didn't have ghosts so I chalked it up to vermin.

Then the next day...scratching.

Loud enough to stop our conversation close the basement door and keep it moving.

So we deduced that we have a squirrel or a bird in our chimney.

Crap.

I have been trying for 72 hours to get contractors. Who knew June was their busy season?

Dear Groupon,

I was extremely excited for the Old Navy deal. I purchased one in anticipation of using the deal to purchase my husband's fathers day gift from our kids.

I received a code stating that it could take 48 hours to process. I purchased the deal via my iPhone app and constantly checked throughout the weekend. Each time the status stated "pending". I checked again only to find the deal closed. I want to know what happened especially if you charged me.

I really like using your service please say it was an error of processing.

The LadyBug Adjustment

Now that the Sammich is here, people constantly ask me about the Ladybug Adjustment to which I chuckle and say "She loves the Sammich as long as he isn't near me". Ladybug hates not to be held or carried especially if momma or daddis is carrying the baby.

If I'm nursing Sammich, he can expect a slap or an anticipated slap from his older sis. If Sammich is in his carrier or chair, Ladybug will pat his head or rub his belly. I try my best to explain that we need to gently pat and play with Sammich but that doesn't work.

Any ideas?

The Struggle Within

Right now, as I'm writing this, I am wracking my brain with the idea of family planning.

Religiously - I should be practicing NFP

Realistically - I should be taking the pill.

NFP is GREAT for people trying to get pregnant. The inverse is it is a problem for people trying to avoid pregnancy during breastfeeding periods (you're not typically on a constant schedule for ovulation and menstruation).

NFP is endorsed by the Catholic Church. The pill is not. In fact, according to the Pope, you can and should go to Hell for obstructing the natural course of man (sperm meeting eggs).

Every OBGYN that has ever treated me has basically stated the high rate of failure that NFP presents, I'll be honest, I didn't plan on the Tax Baby 2011 or Tummy Bug 2009 so I guess they are right.

According to my husband we should be doing NFP. According to my mind and sanity - I should be taking the pill. I honestly believe that I could lose my marriage over this disconcerting debate.

And the struggle continues.

A tale of pulling yourself up by your boot straps. The story of Blanche Kelso Bruce is intriguing journey of slavey to a national powerbroker. Its interesting to note that many of the same conditions that occurred in Bruce's day are repeating themselves today - speculation, war, economic downturn, and class segregation between elitists in both the White and Black community versus working class and middle class Americans.

I was also amazed that although Bruce was light complected, his wife's family thought his family was inferior due to the Bruces being former slaves (although Bruce's mother was a house slave and a mistress to both of her White masters and favored above other slaves). I was definitely intrigued by the contradictions this book produces from Bruce's political alliances and calculations to that of his son.

Being Grateful

Last week, Attractive Al and I voted for takeout - PapaJohns- he sat upstairs watching game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals with the ladybug and I watched Oprah behind the scenes with Sammich. The doorbell rang and then

Disaster

AA and ladybug were slowly walking downstairs holding when he slipped on the stairs dropping LB. I heard screams and groans and I launched into momma mode and ran up to assess LB who was still groaning. I picked my baby up and realized that her leg was completely limp and unresponsive. Paying the delivery man and scrambling to the car, I rushed my crew to the ER. There, I realized the magnitude of LB's state - a compete break of her femur. She was rushed into Xray and cat scan and later to the regional pediatric hospital.

AA was distraught because the local hospital had to contact the country social services and the fact that he could hold his daughter and fall. I was distraught that my child was in pain. All I could do was pray the Rosary.

Needless to say I could have been angry at the accusation of child abuse but I wanted to assert the fact that while LB can climb stairs (she climb stairs before walking), she cannot descend the stairs at home. This past week, I had just witnessed LB slowly descending the outdoor steps at church. So social services could try but I had nothing to hide. I wanted to know how and when LB was to be treated. Plus LB (and all children) feed off of their parents so I was sure to be positive and chipper.

It took nearly 24 hours but LB was treated and during her stay, we were visited by the book cart and a puppy. Sammich totally visited and jammed it up with charm. A coworker visited and made me think of other things.

I am grateful that LB is on the mend and home. I'm grateful to staff at the pediatric hospital who did everything to make LB comfortable.

I'm grateful that my baby is home.

Its Official! I'm a mother of two.

April 2011 marks a momentous occasion - I became a mother two. I also became a woman who:

Wants to get in touch with myself again by exercising, reading more, and loving and accepting myself.

I choose not to really discuss the latest pregnancy of the Tax Baby because I'll admit I really wasn't into what was happening - I did it before not a fully year prior and I was just over the whole etherial mother act. I was more into finding about my career and trying to salvage some semblance of normalcy that until it was time to have my baby (read March 2011), I was going through the motions of pregnancy - fake a smile and everyone is happy.

Now, I'm ready to move forward and find out how well motherhood and career will be. Since Tax Baby has arrived, I have been inundated with the idea that I'm enough just the way I am. And you know what, I'm liking that idea. From Lady Gaga to Oprah - the message of acceptance has come across loud and clear.

So here it goes - lets see where this takes me.

I'm both sorry and having to come to realization that between my job, my child and my ever concluding pregnancy (thank you God...thank you) - I"m due in four weeks, I'm increasingly busy.

Since May of last year, I have been assigned to review a topic specific issue within our agency so I have been busy from then until now with interesting, mundane, the odd, and the exciting aspects that affect this policy area. Needless to say, its been a wild ride and its not going to stop anytime soon.

So I'll try to keep you updated at least once a month on motherhood

The Caps Game

So over the MLK holiday weekend, Attractive Al and I were able to spend some much needed time alone together.

What are parents to do?

Go to a Caps Game

Let me just say that it was kinda awesome seeing Ovy and company. Although there were some hiccups along the way:

Metro had major track work - so we had to stop in Rossyln, take a bus to Farragut Square, hop back on to Metro Center and walk to Verizon.

Upon take the bus, we encountered Up Close Students who had lovely vignettes about our metro area including:

"Did they move the monuments"
"Isn't there a lake by the Lincoln Memorial"
"Whoa! Is that the Smithsonian for the American Indian?" (it was actually the World Health Organization)

Needless to say I had to bite my tongue by not laughing at our future leaders but I had to move and bury my head in AA's shoulder.

The game was awesome although we did have to sit next to Ottowa fans who loved to mock the fact that DC has just gotten into hockey (not true) or that we had no team spirit (also not true).

So we left at the start of the third period and headed over to Rosa Mexicana (read expensive Mexican cuisine) and enjoyed queso with chorizo, some beef fajitas and fried plantains. Delish.

In any case, yeah - it was fun

Yeah...I'm pregnant

So its 28 weeks and I'm sitting in lab waiting for the pee test and my blood drawn from my glucose tolerance test.

Yesterday, I was told that I need more water and more iron.

Everyday I feel tired - I don't think iron will help.

Monday I had a near incident at the local Walmart where I nearly fainted from extreme dizziness, overheating, and nausea. Its bad. Not as bad as Baby 1.0 but damn near.

At least I don't have lunch lady leg.

Anyway...I'm going to work on that.

In the mean time, I have been plugging away at work and buying the Ladybug a new bed. We just have to put it together.

The reason for the post is quite simple, that up until recently (like Monday) I didn't feel extraordinarily pregnant. Yeah there is that thing that resembles a basketball in front of me and yeah people say stupid crap like "everywhere I turn I see pregnant women"....not cool. Of course you have the very daily reminder of people looking you up and down wondering if you're fat or prego - I nearly wanted to pulverize a BIA law enforcement staffer for that infringement.

The Ladybug has also been oblivious to the whole another kid is on the way although she thinks my fat belly is hilarious to blow raspberries on and last night her antics were rewarded with a serious move by Tax Baby - I don't he likes her especially since being able to move in response to stimuli (around week 17).

I also forgot to explain milestones to Momma Sense and Attractive Momma which is a complete 180 from Ladybug. I just don't feel the need to share plus I went through once in the last two years, why bother doing it again?

So forgive me if you too felt insulted by my lack of disclosure. With that I move on with life.

The Man Cave/ Kid Room

Nearly a year ago, we were searching for a home.

Now that we purchased a house, it's time to make it a home. One way would be to create a place of zen for all family members.

Which means...

MANCAVE!!!!

So we're arranging the following:

Fireplace refurbishment - 2013
Flooring
Furniture

The Mudroom

This is my Mudroom.

Since I live in a huge development, the master plan indicates that this room was meant for a fourth bedroom or office.

For me, I need a Mudroom. A place to take off shoes, coats, bags, and random crap upon debarking from work, shopping, and school. At some point I will add the study area functionality for LadyBug and the Sammich.

For this room we need to:
Rekey the lock
floor with tile
Paint
Purchase hooks, benches, and cabinets for storage.
Hang hooks and pictures
Buy a window shear or blinds for front door
Hang a drying rack in laundry room.

To be included in this room is a card table purchased years ago for a central place to sort, fold, etc.

We start this weekend with Friday being lock getting serviced and Saturday with a flooring measurement and paint estimate.

The I have popped out two kids in two years now leave me alone wish list

For those who don't know, I'm with child, bun in the over, or better yet - Attractive Al fertilized me again.

All joking aside I can't really complain - look at the first kid.

Not bad. But considering that I didn't anticipate this second go round, I'm going to use that to my advantage. I plan on traveling, home improvement, and life improvement projects to keep my husband as far away from me as possible. He'll be too tired to think about marital issues.

Health Care! Health Care! HEALTH CARE!!!

You may have heard it before...

I don't like health care. I'm proud that we have "reform" but at what cost? When does the real benefit kick in? So I was reading my favorite periodical, The Washington Post, and I found this article/query:

How concerned are you that health-insurance costs are rising for federal workers? What's your plan for dealing with the 7.2 percent increase? Does it offer any comfort that the increase is lower than what many private-sector workers will face?

To answer the question - its been a big question every year for us. Last year, I signed up for the family plan which doubled in the costs of premiums per pay period and the annual deductible. Some of the benefits are great - maternity care is covered although there are some issues that I had to parse with my health care provider with**. Meanwhile dental is not and even though I added dental to my plan, I still have to wait for claims to go through my primary provider before they go through my dental provider***. The bureaucracy in the health care industry is what I truly take offense to.****

Costs rise every year and honestly, our pay raise that people claim is a horrible is eaten up by these costs. Its the lesser of two evils - do I live with an extra $300 per pay period or do I sleep better at night knowing that my family is covered? I don't think I could manage without health care - I have an infant and one on the way - the per cost of medical treatment is ridiculous without health care.

Its a scary thought. How am I going to really see any cost of living increases in pay when its eroded by health care costs? The answer is you don't. Shrug and move on. Don't get me wrong, I have lived without health care, even mediocre health care is better than none but I say there is something wrong when we let our medical premiums go up for inflation and worker's salaries are not. I really feel for the families that work minimum wage and need care - it wasn't that long ago, when without health care, I worked for a clothing chain department store. You had to work a minimum set of hours over time to qualify for health care then about half your pay was eaten by it. What about rent or food or childcare?

It requires more just to survive these days - people fighting to stay in their houses, ensuring their children have good daycare, feeding your children and clothing them. As much as we pay, we should get more on our investment...just saying.

I'm off my soap box for now.

**The parsing with my health care provider including yelling screaming and dam near kicking about a test that only pregnant women take that my doctor highly encourages. Needless to say my health care provider didn't pay the cost of the pre-natal test.

***My dentist has to submit a claim to my medical insurer then to my dental insurer. Its not the other way around. My dental insurer is useless and clueless and my medical insurer is stingy. Who knew?

****I work in a bureaucracy...we're not that crazy.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

I owed you this a while back...

Let's be real - we all knew that HP7 both parts 1 and 2 would be gut wrenching. Well the Piper is here and wants his bill paid - and yes, HP7p1 is an emotional ride.

The imagery and the very real fact that the characters and the actors portraying them have grown up through the course of 12 years on screen with us.

I loved Hermione's role and how Emma Watson portrayed her strength. EW really carried this movie on several fronts. The production and direction were amazing and I'm very proud of how the story came to fruition on the screen.

Let us just do a quick review of the plot - Harry and friends drop out of school in search of the horcruxes that He who shall not be named used to split open his soul and live forever. We, as readers and viewers, have already found two - the ring of Tom Riddle Sr, and the Diary of Tom Riddle Jr - which have already been destroyed. We know the locket, which was found at the end of Book 6 is a horcrux, we know that Harry Potter is also one, as the creepy snake that accompanies you know who. So anyway, Harry, Hermione and Ron venture off to find the real locket of Salazar Slytherin only to be forced into some unusual and uncomfortable circumstances - chase and adventure pursue.

We also learn the real meaning behind the Deathly Hallows which although not explicitly discussed here in this film will make its mark in the second film (we also didn't get to Dumbledore's history either).

I had a few deep breath moments and other than that nothing - it was a good movie that it was hard to believe that it was 2 hours and 20 minutes long.

A New Year? A New Expectation?

Well Happy New Year!

I'm trying to figure out what that means to me but in the meanwhile, please enjoy a beautiful smile from the Ladybug:

I am not one for New Years Resolutions but I am one for goals so here are my top ten:

1) I will remember to soak LB's poopy clothes from daycare.

2) I will have more patience with Attractive Al and not go rouge when things aren't in order.

3) I will complete my mud room by 2012.

4) I will buy an attic fan.

5) I will have 70% of my family room planned or completed by 2012.

6) I will send my Christmas cards by 12/5/11.

7) I will treat myself better through salon trips, pedicures, and frequent exercise.

8) I will hang my cork board and be more diligent in meal planning and family scheduling.

9) I will read more.

10) I will find time to spend with AA.

While no one is more important the other. These goals require a commitment to myself.

With that said, bring on 2011!

Oh and a post script on the teeth - best trip to the dentist ever! I said it. I meant it. Happy New Year!

Ohhhhh! The perils of pregnancy.

Periodontal disease or gingivitis are major contributors of tooth decay during pregnancy. So apparently the Ladybug and her brother, the Sammich are sucking the living daylights out of me. I was diagnosed with this disease in the summer of 2010. I am just NOW starting my treatment plan that my dental company approved for me.

So while you're enjoying your end of year soiree, I'll be on percocet high as a kite.

I hope that your Christmas hangover is over and you're preparing for New Years. Me? We are busy cleaning our basement in order to find massive piles of stuff to give away.

What didn't help was the massive amount of stuff LB received at Christmas including

A laptop
A tea set
A walker

Needless to say we have yet to assemble said walker or tea set. And the most amusing part is that LB played with wrapping paper all damn day.

Other than that, AA and I are gearing up for an event at CoachLand, the BCS national championship, work, Tax Baby prep, and taxes.

We realize that life isn't about accumulation of wealth or material things and that simple acts of kindness goes a long way. Its an almost every day occurrence to see a Washington Post article on forclosures or how local area food pantries are being taxed to the hilt with people requesting food to feed their children. More and more, we seeing dark times ahead - without assigning guilt or blame, many Americans are stepping up the plate and helping their neighbors whether its a farmer helping her friends and strangers by providing hay to local farmer and ranchers who can't afford it or donating time or money to a soup kitchen and homeless shelter.

As I journey to understand the nature of my own heart, I am constantly shown that Christ lives in all of us - from a friend letting a family with no extended relative in the area share a meal during the holidays to the random waitress who was willing to give us her Christmas tree. Kindness, in all its forms, goes a long way. So take time and listen to the message, it may just warm your heart.

Its the Holiday Season! I am so excited. We have a tree and some trimmings (we're starting slow and we'll build over time). But the one thing I have to have is watching Love Actually and listening to the LA soundtrack. It is by far, one of the most comprehensive movies of the last 10 years. It had a great interconnecting story line and great music.

Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaking suspicion... love actually is all around. - Love Actually 2003.

I remember watching the movie in 2003 (I actually saw it twice) thinking about how nice it would be to have a great romance like that of Natalie, the curvy assistant to the Prime Minister and how their courtship was genuine.

Now that I have a child with one on the way, I am increasing appreciative of the relationship of father and son (Liam Nieson and Thomas Sangster). I just want my child to be happy and I love that the father (really the boy's stepfather) was willing to endure hours on end of drumming (Drumming is my Life - one of the best quotes on that darn chalkboard) to even allowing his child to totally breech security (and yes European security is a lot more strenuous than that of the US) in a major airport.

It should definitely go without saying that touching a pregnant woman is a major no-no.

With that said, its about time to help you non-moms, moms to be, and well everyone else understand the simple fact moms are different beings. We don't mince our words but we don't typically fly off the handle because we are usually being watched by our children. So let me help you when you hear or have to say the following and its actually meaning.

"She's tired" or "She's not having a good day" - despite your best efforts, it would not be wise to grab or hold my child.

If you hold your hand out and grab my child and they immediately pulls away - also not a good idea to grab or hold my child.

If you do manage to grab or hold and start kissing my baby and you immediately see me walking toward you with a baby bag - DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER!!! You have officially breached security. Unless your a relative or a godparent, it aint wise player, it aint wise at all.

The best thing to day is ask if you can hold one's child not just reach your arms out. If the parent says "that's not a really good idea", you have to consider the fact that either your sick or basically we don't know where you have been or even bigger issue is that baby has just been sick or exposed to something that the parent doesn't want to spread to you. Babies put their hands in the mouths, their feet in their mouths, scratch their areas when their diapers are open and while yes parents try to wash hands - its our first post diaper change trip, you still don't know - a lot people don't wash their hands.

Another way to show good will is to hand the baby a toy because from my own experiences, my child is around a set group of adults and small children all day - she doesn't interact with strangers and she's at the age where everyone other than her subsect of caretakers, peers and friends.

So when approaching small children, be respectful, show that you mean no harm, and if the parent says "not now" don't take offense. Other than that - don't be surprised if neither me or my child are pleased with your antics.

Movie Review: Robin Hood (2010)

So Attractive Al has wanted to see this since it arrived in theaters last summer but we were traveling plus we had just purchased the physical location of CoachLand 1.0 (oh trust there will be upgrades then an acquisition of CoachLand 2.0) so we had shelved the idea of seeing this movie until it arrived on BluRay. We purchased the movie back around Halloween but it sat dormant until Thanksgiving because yes, we stay that busy here.

Anyhoo - I started watching the film and I like the idea that after years in the battle, people didn't really recognize or question Russell Crowe's assumption of the real Robin of Locksley's identity - in fact, it was almost as if he was welcomed to do it. Which got me to wondering...if any man could assume the role of Attractive Al, who would it be?

A few years ago, a fellow blogger who I totally need to visit, posted a funny post about who would be the Second Mr. Jen. Now its my turn, who would be the second Mr. Skywalker aka Attractive Al replacement. Let's look at the contenders:

Jon Hamm - my current obsession. I love his rags to riches story and he does make a very good looking AA dopleganger.

Oscar De La Hoya - he's the only reason I watching boxing today just to see if he appears in a crowd. Yep. Not ashamed of this fact at all. The original AA dopleganger.

Idris Elba - yeah this is a dangerous choice only because every woman in my general acquaintance would attempt to kill me to get to him. Yeah, I don't want a desirable mate like that.

Chiwetel Ejiofor - its a shame that I can't actually spell this man's name but he has been a crush of mine for a long time.

Honestly, as much as I love the premise of a replacement Attractive Al, I can't actually part with the real thing. I already have AA trained (about 85%) on clothes and chores. I just need him to step it up on the kids instead of the fun crap.

Date Night: December 2010

Oh to be like the Obamas have a in house child care, I mean the luxury of having your mom liv with you and leave whenever....

Last Year we made it to ICE! Which is the ultra-expensive winter wonderland that involves a massive amount of ice and below freezing temperatures. We may ago again...depending on our own temperament (read, can I stand LB and her dad in a confined space for that long?). This year we may hit up the free amusement this area has to offer including the Pageant of Peace (it is the proper name assigned by the National Park Service to the National Christmas Tree at the White House and the over 50 smaller trees illustrating art and crafts from each state and territory which donated by children from around the US)...and I have parking for that so again, its free and we can have dinner afterward.

Freedom from the Slavery of Formula

FREEEDOOOMMMMM!!!

Since August 2010, Attractive Al and I have constrained to the daily norms of having a child off breastmilk but unable to consume whole milk.

What's a parent to do?

Use formula.

While not best idea, considering it wasn't long ago when babies in Asia were dying of tainted formula it was our only choice.

The LadyBug took to the idea pretty well by nursing at night through September when she was finally weaned.

Well in early November, we decided to transition LB from formula to whole milk by doing a ratio of 1 part whole milk to 3 parts formula then every subsequent week, increasing the parts of whole milk to formula and closely watching the LB to ensure that she didn't have an allergic reaction.

So far so good!

So I feel like William Wallace at the 8:25 mark on this scene - wanting let out a gut wrenching yell of FREEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!

The Heeves and the Sneeves

So a couple of weeks ago, the LadyBug came home with a runny nose and no fever.

Then the runny nose became a runny river of snot.

It hasn't stopped.

Then the coughing came.

So Attractive Al and I, being the responsible parents we try to be, decided to hit up the Safeway and self medicate LB. She started to get better only then did I realize that I could seriously overdose this kid.

We stopped that course of action fast.

Then Thanksgiving rolled around and we all - AA and myself - joined the sick pit crew. So yeah, we all stopped up and agitated.

On Black Friday, LB got her 12 month check only to realize that she was about to be attacked by 4 needles and a lead test. Needless to say, she was pissed especially about the finger prick. Now, I'm nursing hives which are not fun especially after taking children's bendryll and finally succumbing the dreaded adult version.

I really hope that I don't fall asleep during Mass.

LeapFrog Waste

When I found out that I was having the LadyBug, I reached out to a woman who was also pregnant but also decided to have a round crib and sell the crib she purchased for her son.

So she included some sheets, some disposable towels, some bumpers, and this toy - its called a Little Leap which sounded great especially when I have noticed that the LadyBug loves remotes and laptops. Needless to say, I pulled out the LL toy and started up setup with my home theater system. Well surprise surprise that it didn't work. So on Black Friday 2010, I went out with AA and the LadyBug in tow and purchased a $20 DVD player. So cut to Saturday when I'm on the floor of the main area cussing and not get any response from my DVD player to the controller (which is a universal remote at its best).

I purchased a LittleLeaps and unfortunately your good brand doesn't extend to this - this is the worst piece of junk ever. I tried my home theater and even bought a cheap dvd player for it to play - no avail. I can't get any customer support. I don't think I'll be buying your products anymore. I also purchased at least $40 in support dvds for the system - what am I supposed to do with this now that I can't use. Thanks for making me feel that I wasted my money.

Needless to say, I'm a little pissed and I'm thisclose to selling this sucker and all its accompanying DVDs on Craigslist or making a nice claim on my 2010 Tax Return (because a new house, all the extra taxes I pay, childcare I'm claim, student loans, and other various claims including charity isn't enough).

Uggggh.

Black Friday

Black Friday!

What I fear is being mobbed by random strangers fighting for the three televisions on sale for $50.

This year, I'm getting up at the ass-crack of dawn in order to get to what you see above. Although AA mom, in a very gracious way, decided to buy this for me - I"m kinda wrangling with the hard decision of should I say no or should I shut up and take the gift that even my own mother would not purchase for me.

I also have a list of other purchases including a christmas tree, some toys for ladybug and possible purchase of a blue tooth.

So I didn't get my stand mixer but I am scheming to get it at some point and no I haven't checked if AA's mom made the grand purchase. I did get a $30 tree, a $20 dvd player, and a much needed gift for the LadyBug.

The Iron Bowl 2010

Wow!

I haven't spoken about the importance of today! Today is the Iron Bowl or the most important day in the Auburn Tiger Football Schedule. It is the day that whether we've won every game (this year and in 2004) or lost nearly every game, we can redeem ourselves by beating Bama.

One year, Tommy Tubberville (my favorite Auburn coach) was asked if he cared if he would keep his job, he was quoted as saying "I don't care about tomorrow, I just beat Alabama." Yeah, its that important. The game results will impact team pride and strategy for the next 364 days. Will coaches keep their jobs? Will we will adjust our offensive strategy? It is all determined by the culmination of this game.

So at 2:30, I will be watching and praying that Auburn can officially run the table and complete another undefeated season.

I have been busy running around making Mac & Cheese from an old family recipe and enjoying dinner around NOVA and MD. But these past five years have so different from other 23 that I have illustrate how crazy my family really is:

You can only imagine. One Thanksgiving, DN put pancake mix in the gravy thinking it was flour. Or the year, I started a fight with my mom's favorite niece over sweet potato pie - yes, its that good, its like crack good. Or the first year, mom hosted a gianormous family dinner including her own mother so needless to say my mom would have been served with either a valium or a good glass of wine.

I'm so grateful for the Lady Bug and Attractive Al and the pre-negotiated agreement that I never have to cook a turkey - I'm a sides and a dessert girl, large birds aren't my specialty.

In any case, you can't choose your family (don't I know it) but you can choose to have a good time. I wish you the best this Thanksgiving.

The Sammich

In deed, one year ago today, I gave birth to precious precocious princess named Aurelia. She refused to sleep except when she nursed herself in oblivion. She would watch you with one eye from across the room. She pooped atomic bombs and still does. She loves to be held to calm down and also to sleep (really, what's with all the attention kid). She loves to eat by herself. She hates to crawl. She loves animal crackers, Special Agent Oso, and mommy's Sloppy Joes.

I can't believe it.

Ze Men...Sometimes You Have to Save Them From Themselves.

Ugh.

I know. I know. I have been away for a while. I have been busy with work, with the Lady Bug (who turns 1 in less than a week), with Attractive Al, with Tax Baby (who's cooking away), and even with Momma Sense.

But I would like to focus my attention this week on the man. Particularly my man. Right now he's plugging away with trying to hook up a cable box for the Pacquiao vs. Margarito fight. I'm not pleased at all. The whole point of me buying a tivo was to avoid this crap. Let the man go to a bar and enjoy the fight in the company of others but not me and not my house.

I thought it was that simple. Alas, it is not.

AA got home and wanted to simply plug the cable box in the wall and to the tv without using a cable in cord (which means no signal). When I asked, I got berated...yeah its not that simple. When I suggested that he call the cable company for guidance, I got berated. Not so simple.

Until AA called the cable company who in turn told him that everything I had been saying for the last thirty minutes was in fact...RIGHT.

Ugh. Can't live with him. Can't open a mayo jar without him.

I need a holiday.

I can't believe its October and that the temperatures are dropping faster than University of Alabama running up the score on the University of Florida. In any case, it's time to look up those cold weather recipes that make the heart and soul warm to the touch.

Beef and Cheese Noodle Bake - think Hamburger Helper without the shame of having the box in your grocery cart.
Chicken and Dumplings - the easy version not the I can kill you with a whole bunch of pepper version
Beef Stew with Cream Biscuits - I impressed my in-laws with this, you can't go wrong
Chicken Tortilla Soup - this is really comfort food
Three Bean and Beef Chili - another wow, I'm so glad to curl up on Saturday afternoon before church meal

Get Yo Man Chicken - we haven't had this in a long time but this is definitely food for the soul

Caught with a Bad Babysitter

Ugggggh.

Needless to say, I'm a little peeved and a little frantic - the babysitter who gave a reputable profile on a pretty reputable site is well not so reputable.

Let see, there was the lack of response. The phone stating that while she was 45 minutes away she then proceeded to call at the designated reporting time to tell me she was in the same place. In a cab.

Do you see the problem with this?

So I missed a pretty important event to a pretty important person and the only thing I could do was say "I'm sorry". I really don't like being in that position cause I know how it feels to feel jilted. Which I felt on several levels.

You ask where was Attractive Al? I gave him a night of responsible irresponsibility. If that make sense. In other words, I didn't expect to see him until 10 pm.

Bad Babysitter,

Unfortunately, I have been unable to contact to you at your cell phone via voice message or text and the alternate number you supplied has become deficient. It has become increasingly clear that you will be unable to provide stable and reliable childcare services for my family.

I cannot hire or continue to try arrange for you to care for my child when you are sick (which by no fault of your own) or tardy. The latter is the greater issue - I was due for an event of great importance and I value promptness in myself and those around me and although I do understand the nuances of this area and traffic, I cannot accept the severity of the situation. it is now eight o clock and you have not contacted me since 6:45 pm - that in itself is unacceptable.

Hopefully, this email will reach you in time before you arrive at my home, if at all, so that you may turn around and go home.

The end of summer

Ugh. Summer is ending.

The Lady Bug isn't sleeping through the night. We are moved away from nursing for food to nursing for comfort plus I can't produce enough milk for LB anymore. But she's slowly getting there-just more patience. Also, LBs swimming class is over so she doesn't have any extra curricular activities. She is being more social. By that, I mean she's biting!

Tax Baby is growing and the reason how I know is the increased emotional lack of self control and patience that is occurring. Just the other day, I have already launched into Attractive Al about his laundry habits and the need to wash at least one load of towels instead of expecting me to do the whole shebang.

Oh and how is Attractive Al? Handsome and brooding as ever but more calm about tax baby-I swear I could give my siblings and my kids a lesson in abstinence if there was a free second of my day.

That being said, I hope you have a fabulous labor day weekend, stay dry and I'll be back with my LB lessons learned to take forward with Tax Baby.

Fading Friendships...

I read that thinking...hmmm. Okay thanks for the eight month setup, could have used that when I was five months pregnant. In any case, I realize that the master and commander of my ship has a greater role and I shouldn't really worry about what my single friends anymore. Lets face facts - being single has its high points but so does being a mom. Now I get to be more choosy when going out (thank goodness) or really work on my house (which I totally should be doing). Its a shame that I can't connect the two parts of my life but I have come to realization that its for the best and to move on. I doubt that I will ever reconnect with the singles friends from college who do live in the area.

So mommas - any ladies drop the ball and leave you high and dry?

Oh all the joys of being a parent to an infant and a baby in utereo!!!

I say that because I'm uncontrollably tired, my prenatal vitamins (the most fun of the Lady Bugs Term) are killing me (plus I went OTC on this go round), LB is teething something fierce and she is now requesting table food.

We're are forging ahead in this vast unknown in Coach Land. Being parents to two children under the age of two. Millions of have done it so why can't we? Granted that after this Tax Baby arrives, my uterus is closed for the forseeable future.

Lady Bug had her 9 month check and despite being low on weight (she was a prize fighter) and low on height, the doctors still want her to crawl and pull herself up to stand...I can see one of those things happening. Tax Baby is apparently fine and from this point on, I'm going to have to stand my ground with my OB's office and tell them to stop asking intruding questions about pregnancies so close together. Its called LIFE. People live it and move on.

Oh....

Massive body ache as my house has been turned into a Holiday Inn.

The parents and Bama Boy left Sunday and arrived safety back in Tiger Town in the evening but not without incident from The Playboy. The Banker has arrived with a Sorority Sister and they have been crashing on my air mattress in my living room.

But I think the Lady Bug is missing her Gi-Gi and Grandpaps. They took her to Mount Vernon and Ford's Theater. In fact LB was so into Mount Vernon that she was interacting in the Theater. I think she was feeling patriotic much to her daddy's chargin. Attractive Al and DN/GN traded barbs on the evils of President Lincoln. AA was anti Lincoln and DN is pro and is practically an savant of Lincoln knowledge.

Other than that, the parents/grandparents took a day and explored Arlington National Cemetery. DN still can't find Joe Louis but did find Medgar Evars.

Now, I'm dealing with trying to build a closet, going through my storage unit stuff, and officially trying to settle in.

The Banker is here...

Needless to say that causes more drama than it should. We picked up at the airport headed to Target for pillows where Bama Boy made a new friend just by wearing his Alabama tee. I was very polite and refrained from making a snide Bammer joke. We followed MS around while she hunted for the cheapest pillows (because $4.94 aint cheap enough), snicked at DN because of The Banker's hiding a $20 dress on the conveyor. That was fun.

Then we headed to the Fish Market where they seated five adults and one infant in the Anchor Bar. Wise choice but in any case, the Lady Bug was none to happy for us to be screwing up her scheduled nursing. So I excused myself to the Ladies where I nursed standing up (what? I don't want to whip one out in public - I already have a baby in bar, how much more southern dirty can you get?). Needless to say, we returned to find MS giving the Spanish Inquisition to the waitress about lemons, tomatoes, cheese, and citric acid (all of which she cannot eat) - poor lady. Oh and the fact that the Fish Market doesn't sell catfish - that also set MS off.

We get home, get Lady Bug down for bed only for me to realize that at 4:30 this morning that AA didn't move LB to her crib and that the thing squealing next me is my child. Oh and the AA eye itches have returned. Lovely.

So....

My parents got here yesterday with Bama Boy and Lady Bug is taking well that they are here. They hung out, napped, snacked on good veggies (she actually ate?) and waited patiently for our return. In fact, we got home, part of our lawn was done (DN allowed a landscaper to do a "free trial"...don't ask).

So AA and I got home, decamped, debriefed and then got ready for dinner (me) and lawn work (AA). I was busy making spaghetti (onions, peppers, meatball/meatloaf mix - veal, pork, and beef -, and Paul Newman's organic marinara sauce) and salad. AA was mowing and weeding. Lady Bug took her grandparents shopping at Safeway (because I didn't spend an exorbant amount of money already) and Tuesday Morning (again...why?). At seven, we all gathered for a nice family meal. By 8, we were in the car to Walmart....again why???? This time to obtain cokes, a car seat, and a walker.

A walker? Why you ask? Because DN believes that because Lady Bug refuses any more than the mandated 5 minutes of belly time, she will be inept to be mobile. I believe this assumption to be wrong but hey I'm just the mom to Lady Bug.

Anyhoo, we're in Walmart. In the baby section. I"m looking at a car seat for AA's car while I hear Bama Boy say "Skywalker, you may want to come over here now". I drag my car seat over to see Lady Bug in an elevated walker (Walmart, like many other stores, allows for their baby merchandise to be displayed at eye level) having a ball while DN is laughing. Seriously? "Can you please take her out of it please?" I ask to which I get a "But she's having fun." reply...really? Sighs. I agree to the purchase of a walker since they are paying (again, why bother). But I don't want the pink walker (you have to hand it to me, I'm thinking unisex) I would rather have the blue or the green one. So we ask an associate to find us one but only the condition that we buy her one too...again why am I here? The crazy associate gets us the walker and we debate on whether its really the we were looking at (not exactly the codes don't match up) at which point the crazy associate yells at us because we don't know the merchandise like she does (again, why am I here?). That being said, that was the END of our foray into Walmart baby merch.

Bama Boy and DN walked off to find sodas while I grabbed a diaper genie refill, a bra and some sleep shorts for AA all while fending off random questions from MS like why do I wear underwires (none of your beeswax) or why does AA wear sleep shorts (cause sleeping in the buff would offend you). I call AA to meet us and grab the purchases and then we head toward the registers (the four of twenty available for 100 customers) then as we are about to load up our purchases on the conveyor belt, we are told to get in another line because the cashier is a minor and has to stop working at 9 pm. I nearly cut the fool on the cashier manager. Why have a minor on a register at 8:45 knowing they would have to deny customers and you're not even operating on full capacity? I was so ready to walk out then and there. Another cashier sees MS and motions for her to come over and ring her up so even wash of the situation. We get our stuff only to find out the car seat is $40 overpriced because surprise surprise Wally world isn't placing their merch in the right place. Needless to say that this sets DN for the better part of twenty minutes. We load up the car and walk back into Walmart and get in another debate with the crazy baby merch associate.

Time to walk out and time for bed. And not a moment too soon either.

We get home, decamp yet again. DN puts the walker together and and insists that Lady Bug be fitted for the toy although she is prepping for baby time. So I carry a butt naked baby into the living room so she can appease her granddad. A shower and story (Ferdinand) and Lady Bug and Mommy are in dream land.

I'm tired. And its just the end of day one.

Needless to say it's the place all of NoVA goes but doesn't talk about...it's like the Columbus, Georgia of my existence. I tell people I'm going to Woodbridge only if I want someone to know my last known whereabouts.

Anyhoo, we are in a mad rush for the impending arrival of Momma Sense and Dad Nonsense (everyday I realize he's more certifiably insane than the day before). We hit up Wegmans and Bob Evans although the original plan was to eat at Weggys except breakfast stopped at 10:30 (even on Sunday).

Now we have hit up Home Depot for a weed eater, a fan, some GFIs, and some car supplies.

On a slightly more entertaining note, we just finished the following:

Lady Bug: I'm Swimming and a July Update

Hey People!!!

Wooo! I started the swimming! So far, I'm loving it! Daddy took me and mommy took my picture. Don't I look like Esther Williams? Aren't you impressed with my mad knowledge of film legends? I know.

Yeah so as you can see the Lady Bug is growing up and fast. She is in the clinging phase of life so I can't go far without Attractive Al calling and pleading for me to return home. I think its time for him to experience the constant frustration of being a parent. As for the lil one - she's refusing solids (see the devious smile below):

Its frustrating to say the least and I honestly feel that AA isn't that support so that's why I'm taking a hard line of "Mommy needs a life and Daddy needs to grow a pair"...harsh.

In other news, my new job at my new job has worn me down to no end. But its worth it. At some point, either LB grows up or this gets easier but I'm not throwing in the towel.

We have a "situation" near us at work. Those pesky landlords that still have our contract on us and didn't rent out our old place have come a knocking again. And the kid, well she's sick yet again...I think she's teething.

All while I have to work! How rude of them.

Now, I'm strategically trying to leave and handle all the loose ends. Needless to say that nearly two months of this can wear a girl down. And it has. The ceiling was fixed last week, our panel is in the process of being fixed but not without the casualty of my ac, and the microwave should be working by Friday.

Fun.

Did I mention that I also have to install new window treatments lest I moon my neighbors more? That needs to happen today if possible.

Hey Peeps
My mom is kinda worried about me and the house and just stuff so I"m gonna fill you in a few things while she's off doing her thing.

This weekend is Father's Day and last year, mom took care of my gift. This year, well she's gotta do the same thing. I have been out of school so I may not get to do Daddy craft for the old man.

So I got a card, and a movie (thanks mom), and mom sat online while I snored to get daddy a rsvps for a phone at the apple store (apples make phones?). Do you think he'll like it? Last year, he got a suit and this year he gets a good movie and a phone. Of course he'll like it, its from his princess.

While I'm doing that, I"m also directing the daddis to organize my mommy's gift for her birthday. I think she needs a night off from all the dramaz. What do yall thing for her? Dinner and a movie?

You ask what's all the dramaz? Well, we're getting new electricity framework in the house, new windows, working on the yard, cleaning the deck, and properly move in. Well we have to fit all that in while mom and dad work and take care me of course. I promise to get better as soon as we get all this yucky pink stuff in my system.

June Update: Attractive Al may have a breakdown

Time flies....

I keep saying that huh? Well it does. Since I last left yall, I was moving in and suffering from a blackwater issue. Well, I'm still moving in and I'm still having issues.

Not just the blackwater - that's been taking care of. Now there is a hole in my kitchen where the blackwater was leaking. Oh and the microwave shorts out the house creating a fire hazard.

Who are these asshats who believe that they can flip a house? In any case, the microwave is kaput until we can get an electrician out here to build a dedicated circuit.

What next? I should not ask because something worse could go wrong. So, I'll stop with the negative thinking and accentuate the positive.

I got a new job, I visited my parents - aunts and uncles - and saw my grandmother, and I own a house.

The new job leaves me exhausted every day but I get to serve an awesome mission - helping Native Americans or Indian Country (a local term in the house since we have two tribal members here). I loved working for this before I moved up and now from my current organization I get to do the same thing! Pretty darn awesome.

The visitation went as well as could be expected. No one was killed in the process - which was a good thing. Although, I kinda got short changed at my 10 year reunion. I'll leave it at that.

As for the house, well you are getting a front row seat for all the dramaz. Have fun.

Oh and Lady Gaga has nothing to do with this post except that she's crazy and she opens up public discourse by just being Gaga.

OMG! Its been Ten Years

I graduated high school in 2000...

Ten years ago today actually.

I remember that day vividly, going to the coliseum for graduation practice. Getting ready with my white dress and white gown and all the drama that Daddy Nonsense created - he actually wasn't going to attend (seriously, how do I call this man my dad with a straight face sometimes).

In any case, I was nervous and cautiously lined up with the other grads on my side of the line. Carefully we walked down the aisle and made our ways to the seats assigned to us. We listened to speeches from the Superintendent, the Principal, and our Class President. Slowly we made our way by name up the stage, being announced by the Vice Principal, grabbed our diploma and listened to cheers. I remember my lil bro, The Playboy standing on the other side with roses (its a Southern tradition to give a girl roses upon graduation).

Then the kids after me showed out...Booty dancing on stage, flips....OMG.

I tried my hardest to keep a straight face because the booty dancers were on our line so we couldn't sit until they were back in the lineup...needless to say the entire student double over laughing. Screw em - I had my diploma and they weren't making me go back.

While the administration was very displeased at our behavior over our time in the educational system including "The Tardy Party" (I don't need to explain do I) or jello in the fountain or pitching pennies at freshmen or some of the guys beating the crap ala "Dazed and Confused" out of the incoming freshmen with paddles. You're getting the gist. We weren't fan favorites so our graduation behavior shouldn't have surprised anyone.

I still can't believe its been ten years. Wow, I can't believe I am here today saying that. Wow.

We moved! Now why isn't my toilet working?

I'm still a bag lady but Coach Land has a permanent base of operations!

I can't believe it either. Saturday came, movers made it and the cleaners and all the drama.

Where shall I begin?

So the movers took everything that wasn't nailed down. The cleaners wiped down and mopped our apartment and the house. Yep all good.

The problem? The seller. Apparently the toilet was installed incorrectly when they flipped the house. The commode required a double wax seal but alas my shitty seller didn't do that. So what happened? The crap rained on my kitchen. Yep. I called my home warranty and my insurance company who proceeded to mitigate the problem including mold (black water does that).

Uck.

My toilet works but there is a huge hole in my ceiling. Uck.

Reflections of Motherhood

I am winding down for my first mom's day. I had breakfast in bed and then a lunch at the National Harbour. A great day!

But motherhood means so much more than crafts and cards and candy. It's the sacrifice, the unconditional love, and the willingness to roll up your sleeves and dig into the muck. I can see all the bs my mom put up with while DN was on duty. And I see it in myself.

Moms have nerves of Steele and hearts of gold. And moms aren't defined by biology but by bonds. It definitely can be said that there have been many women - mom, aunts and grandmas, even my in laws have taught me a thing or two.

Let must just say that yes this is a pitiful excuse to get free cleaning but if it works, it works. I'm tired, I'm living out of boxes, with a six month old who is a new daycare and having anxiety issues because of it. I commute to the new daycare which is about 20 minutes out my normal schedule then back to DC. Yep...I need as much help as I can possibly get.

I would never do this unless I needed to but I've been trying to call in or text to win a cleaning certificate. Today lines were busy and I nearly killed myself on the GW Pkwy (which isn't hard to do considering the construction and odd traffic pattern) while entering.

I know pity party but whatever - I'm juggling work, being a mom to a six month old, a wife, and moving to a new home which is eating me alive because the seller is 2 weeks deliquent in closing and I'm now living out of boxes. I'm tired everyday, barely making it home with no rest.

I don't think I could make this any sadder but I'm also commuting an extra 15 miles to keep my kid in daycare.

Its April 30...I think we have a house.

It's been a scary and emotional ride. Starting in December 2009, when we were stuck in the first of many DC Blizzards, we decided that we had either rent or buy. So tax time rolled around and bam - we decided after getting a very uncomfortable wake up call that we needed to buy. Seriously we need to buy.

I had started lurking on real estate sites in December, going to a few open houses in January but I made a comment on Facebook and a online buddy (Creole In Dc) hooked me up with the greatest Realtor. She is geared toward first time home buyers and she was like a home buying life coach. We had a few trial and errors - a great many bids were tossed in the bin or scoffed at. But when we hit our comfort level, we were on top.

I have dealt with some odd situations, viewing homes with families on the verge of losing everything - those are the times I don't like being a home buyer. Dealing with the world's most incompetent listing agent by that I mean she didn't return my Realtor's calls, emails and I honestly believe we lost our bid because she didn't explicitly state was was necessary for a bid to be accepted. Oh and losing a bid because we wanted a home inspection...you pay for a major investment and you don't want know what's wrong with the house? What's wrong with you?

After months of prayers, sleepless nights, aging in short periods of time, we have a house. In a great community and where we feel we will live for a long (over 5 years and less than 15 years) time. I can't wait to decorate (in two years), have more kids (in two years) and finally pay off this damn debt.

Oh the joys of grand-parenthood

Oh it must be nice to criticize.

I say that because the first of what I only can imagine several discussion on how the Lady Bug should be fed just occured.

No seriously.

So Momma Sense's sister was in town two weeks ago and she was amazed that LB did not eat cereals at 5 months and was solely breastfed. Why? Because all of the previous generation, including yours truly, were eating five course meals at LB's age and slept thru the night. Did I mention that of the last generation, only half of us have our shit together? Another post another time.

So Auntie Sense takes that info back to Alabama and to my parents.

Screw Daddy Nonsense - we aren't talking. Surprise Surprise.

Momma Sense thinks it's imperative for LB to start solids. I think LB can wait until she can fully sit up and want to take a spoon. She shows interest but alas hates utensils. Oh and hates rice cereal. Don't worry we'll start oatmeal on Monday but again, no worries or rush to the process.

So I politely declined further inquisition and said that she could try herself this summer. Why bother when others think they can fo your job better.

Remind me of this post in 28 years and LB has a baby- I hope to offer support not criticism.

ObamaCare needs to hurry up and get here

So I don't like healthcare.

You may have inferred that from my numerous rants on the costs of having a baby. I've been shelling out cash since I was pregnant. And it doesn't stop:

A well baby visit every two months with copay (even though it was advertised that it was free)
Two sick baby visits in two days because Skywalker was scared that the baby wasn't doing what her body was supposed to do.
A sick baby call when LB's navel fell off.
A sick baby visit when LB lost nearly a pound after birth.
Eyecare for me and Attractive Al
Oh and a visit to my general practitioner for an ingrown toe which is still ingrown and now will cost me $200 to settle.

So, I'm all for a healthcare market that reduces prices and forces competition because while BC/BS is the universal provider, they aren't the most customer friendly organization. Also considering that I'm paying over $200 a pay period (that's $400 dollars a month for complete coverage head to toe), I'm not impressed with the service I'm getting.

I'm not a liberal, I'm not a socialist - which I would love to counter with any "Tea Bagger" - socialism implies that we are all equal, this law doesn't do that - it is the application of Keynesian Economics which implies that the government will step in to manage market elements when players cannot be fair or honest.

So

I promise I'm slowly getting back into blogging. This is really go time for me personally. I had big HUGE work product just finish up and now, ready for my personal project to finish and I'm in like Flynn.

But since I have been away, I have noticed a few lurkers. I know I have a steady following of one - thanks Jen on the Edge - but the rest of yall need to introduce yourselves. I noticed that I am being read as far away as the UAE and Australia (G'day!) to a near as Kingstowne (DMV). Some New Yorkers (send me some Cheesecake) some Texans (I need some steak), some Alabamians (send me some chicken fingers) and some Atlantians (I need cash and some good cheap artwork - can you get on the Bobby Brown Expressway for me?).

In any case, I'm Skywalker and I'm from Alabama. I love living in DC and being a new mom - the Lady Bug is 5 months old and I have been married about 18 months now. We are in the process of moving from apartment living to home ownership which is the new blog project. Wish us luck and enjoy the hilarity of being responsible and broke. We are dealing with drama at home getting settled, drama at work moving along the professional ladder, and drama as we forge ahead in a Christian faith that continues to surprise (because when did God tell us that life was easy?).

Coach Land on hiatus?

Yeah sorry - so I have been on hiatus for the better part of this year. We are finding a more permanent base for the actual Coach Land that the virtual Coach Land is a side thought. With work and a baby - virtual Coach Land isn't a priority.

But soon that will change...

I'm working on a new plan based upon a suggestion of a trusted source so I will be back with a vengeance.

So be patient when all shall be revealed.

Well Howdy! Sorry - my sincere apologies. I have been busy to say the least. Baby, work, husband, and well finding another living situation that won't drive two adults and a small infant crazy.

So where are we??? We have given notice, found a maid, found a babysitter who can allow Attractive Al and myself a night off and our nanny will offer this service from time to time, found a couple of neighborhoods that we love, spent too much money.

Easter has come and gone and the Lady Bug is now a member of the faith....YEAH!!! Much to the chagrin of Momma Sense (Baptist) and Attractive Momma - my mother in law and very Pre Vatican II Catholic...so in other words, I can't win.

Work has been busy. We just acquired a new boss who is the polar opposite of the woman who hired me but I'm learning and we're all learning. I have been playing referee in a major project that well...its a long story.

I better go - LB is antsy but will fill you in later.

Postpartum Week 15

I stay busy.
Little did I realize that being a mom leaves me little time to be me.
Being a working really leaves me little time to be me.

With that said, there has to be some push back.

First off, we are busy trying to strategically and logistically live. By that I mean actual living space. Coach Land is getting a little too crowded for my tastes. Lady Bug doesn't even have a closet - its the laundry room so yeah, we are pressed for time to get more space.

Second, work has been crazy with a new boss and my transition into a full time employee with regular responsibilities but yeah!!!

Third, friends - gone. Haven't heard from them since well before I gave birth. Shrugs and moves on.

Fourth, Church. This is where the push back has to occur. I work eight hours, I commute about an hour or more per day. From work, I sit down and play and feed my baby. After that, I feed my husband and myself. Somehow being everywhere at once doesn't really appeal to me anymore (it stopped being appealing after I got pregnant). Neither is nursing in public - another post on that later.

Fifth - I really don't mind people touching LB but now I have to put a firm foot down when a person, I don't like and by the way - doesn't like me*** asked to hold the baby but ended snuggling (mommy snuggling) my child. No more holding LB - sorry that train is gone.

***Why wouldn't someone like me you ask? Well first off, if you infringe on my charity - constantly asking for rides (once is okay but after 10 times and arranging for others to drive you around, we need to talk). Second, crossing something I call boundaries such as my marriage and judge my marriage. With that said, an incident occurred in Fall of last year where Attractive Al said and did something inappropriate with this woman plus I had already made a comment about how she always calls, always wants to us to give her a ride, called on my birthday for the same favor of transportation after being told we were unavailable and then acting hurt about said unavailability. After that Fall incident, I started getting upset to which chicka interjected herself in the situation yet again - that was the last straw. Done. Also on the boundary note, creepy glances at me and my family and constantly walking by me when I'm nursing in the back of the room - again the nice train is gone***

Uggg. Moving on.

LB is off to school next week. She had a mini meltdown on the trial run. Here's my end of the situation

Skywalker: Hello?
Daycare: yeah, how do you feed your baby?
SW: With a bottle....what's wrong?
DC: She's not holding the bottle
SW: She can't hold a bottle she's only 3 months old
DC: Well yeah, I know that she's not taking it
SW: Did you warm it up? Maybe she's not used to you?

So I'm freaking out calling AA to go get LB out of there only find out when I get home, she calmed herself down, ate, and started looking around at her new friends...kids.

Post Partum Week 14

Oh where do I begin?

First there was a snow storm that debilitated the DMV...for two weeks. Two weeks stuck in the house with a cute but angry child and her father. HELP ME!!!

So the snow melted. And the two of them were on good terms but then Lent began and now for 90 days (40 days of Lent and 50 days Easter including its an approximate aftermath) we are busy with Mass, Penetenchuals, and preparation for Lady Bug's baptism. So between that and figuring out where we are going to live (because LB has a lot of crap) that has me stressed - which is what I promised God I would give up for Lent. I know, good luck with that.

Work has been steady and busy while AA is at home. We start LB in day care in a few weeks much to the chagrin of my in laws (they don't pay my rent so they get no say). In other things we have been experimenting with ze culinary exploits:

Also in extended family news - I want to congratulate The Banker at a successful run at Miss Auburn. I couldn't be prouder of her. I wished she won but I know for a fact that she is going to make the rubber meet the road and actually do what she promised her fellow students she would complete WITHOUT being Miss Auburn.

If a 20 year old went up against a 3 month old. Who would win? My money is on LB. But The Banker refuses to let an infant take up the space that she should fill. My sister is fighting for attention from her niece. I shit. you. not.

It all started at Thanksgiving when everyone was cooing over LB while TB was pissed that no one was listening. Cute baby or overzealous college student? I choose the kid too.

So after Thanksgiving, I drove the crew over to Pentagon City where we passed a life size cut out of Princess Tiana at the Carol's Daughter Store and The Playboy tried to bribe the sales associate for it for LB (sweet aint he?). Well to no avail, that sparked the real fight. Who should get first dibs on the Princess Tiana claim?

Well we couldn't find a doll or tee shirt for an infant. So LB wasn't getting anything like for Christmas but when Mama Sense got to Alabama after caring for me and LB, she let The Banker bully her into purchasing both. So I get a text message on Christmas morning with The Banker with framed tee (I shit. you. not) and a doll.

No worries, the REAL child in the family, is due to get her toys and clothes soon. Right after I pummel her aunt.

Hello Moto!

I'm dropping by to say hi and give you an update on the Lady Bug. She's laughing, smiling and talking - well to her she's talking to us. She's fabulous. I just sent my in laws packing back to the Plains and now its Attractive Al's turn to take care of the youngin'.

This is going to be interesting.

While I was MIA from the blog, I returned to work - busy and chaotic. We went home hunting - no luck and we found a house only to be outbid by a buyer who waived a home inspection (who does that). Frustrating. But we do have a great realtor who I extreme confidence in.

As for the in laws, they rearranged my house (again, who does that?), vacuumed my floor, watched my baby, and washed and folded AA undies (really? yes really). So I was pleased and disturbed at the same time.

Also, The Banker is rolling right along with her quest in world domination while The Playboy is well doing his thing. Bama Boy is ECSTATIC at the "dynasty" created by Nick Satan, I mean Saban that I take extra care to piss him off via facebook.

Oh, and work. Well its work. I have managed to avoid the nemesis until Thursday when she was walking down the hallway, sees me, runs into a stairwell, comes back out and rushes by. I wanted to laugh so hard. Issues don't accurately explain what's up but since I'm not tied to her, I don't care.

That's about it here in Coach Land other than me cooking Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies and praying that when I return from work, my child is in one piece and my husband hasn't gone insane.

Its January 18...tomorrow, I start my new job! Tomorrow, I will no longer spend my day walking around my apartment folding clothes or praying Aurie will sleep for 10 minutes so I can get a shower in.

I will miss spending most of my waking day with Aurie. My MIL is in town and she agreed to transition from me to AA so that I could go to work. But before I sign off as a woman recovering from labor and delivery and nursing her child I wanted to walk down memory lane...

She hated this damn thing...seriously I could only get a few hours of sleep out her in it. I tried a sleep positioner, a wedge, a blanket, and stopped just shy of sleeping in it with her.
